Our History

Our church began on Mother’s Day 1986 when six faithful families held the first service of the newly formed Mary Valley Wesleyan Methodist Church. Rev. Rex Rigby, the current National Superintendent of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Australia, preached the first sermon. Our first meetings took place in a farmhouse, but as time passed we bought the building that had housed Mac’s Welding Works on a hillside near Amamoor, overlooking the scenic Mary Valley. The building was converted in stages to its current status. Rev Stan Baker, a former National Superintendent was the first Pastor.

Since then other Pastors have come and gone, teaching, challenging, caring and encouraging us to live holy lives, to grow in our faith, to walk closer with our Lord Jesus Christ, and to see our local community impacted by God’s love and grace expressed through our lives and ministries. Over the years we’ve found that God has used our caring, loving family atmosphere to heal many who have come with emotional and spiritual needs. Many have found a new relationship with God, or had a broken relationship restored and refreshed and have moved on to witness in other places. In the past, worship teams have travelled out on weekend trips to provide music and song in smaller outlying churches. Teams from our church have planted churches in Nambour, Tewantin and Gympie.

Because members of our congregation travel from all around the Gympie and Mary Valley regions we decided many years ago to have a Fellowship morning tea after the Sunday morning service. This practice still continues and we are blessed with an enduring family atmosphere, where time is taken to get to know others, and those visiting for the first time feel welcomed and appreciated.
